Now that the Christmas period is over and the decorations are away I thought it would be a good idea to review some of my Doctor Who themed presents. I’m going to start off with something a little unusual which is one of the favourite presents that my girlfriend Kristy bought me this year.
‘The Cave of Androzani’ soundtrack vinyl from Silva
Screen Productions.
In the digital age we live in everything is
available at the click of a button in download form, people rarely have to wait
and it is now considered normal to maintain a large collection that is entirely
virtual, with that in mind having a release of Doctor Who on vinyl really is something
of a miracle. As someone who likes to own something physical anf not only
collects vinyl but plays it you can only imagine my excitement, this truly was
a real treat.
Pressed onto two beautiful transparent purple vinyl
discs and housed in a double gatefold sleeve this is a very exciting and unique
item that would be a perfect addition to any Doctor Who collection. The colours
on the cover really jump out at you and when you open it up it reveals an inside
as colourful as the outside containing still shots from the episode alongside
an introduction by Roger Limb who wrote all of the music for ‘The Cave of
Androzani’.
Within days of Christmas I had resented and given
the soundtrack a spin. It starts off with the original Doctor Who Theme which
sounds really good on vinyl and is great fun to listen to. The rest of the
soundtrack is very recognisable as Doctor Who; there are a lot of atmospheric
sounds and a great harmony of synths which instantly invoke the idea of
adventures in alien planets.
As a musician myself I think it is easy to tell
that this soundtrack would have been a lot of fun to make because it is a lot
of fun to listen to. The musicians had to think outside of the box to make something
so perfect for such an unconventional show. The BBC radio phonic work shop did
a fantastic job with this soundtrack and clearly put a lot of work and time
into it. One thing is certain, Doctor Who wouldn’t be the same without its
iconic sound.
This vinyl was released by Silva Screen Records in
November 2013, was limited to only 500 numbered copies and cost £24.99 plus
postage. Though the price may seem a little steep for a vinyl, you really do
get your money worth as you get something that is very unique and limited.
Silva Screens have released three records so far including ‘The Cave of Androzani’,
a 2005 Doctor Who soundtrack on double disc and a 10” Krotons soundtrack disc.
Both of the other vinyls are widely sold out so here’s hoping that the
popularity of these discs encourages Silva Screen to produce more.
